Calder Vets Ltd is part of the Calder Vets group (as described on the practice website) and presents itself as a modern practice set up for routine care plus in-house diagnostics and surgery, with access to 24/7 emergency care via Dewsbury Hospital. The website highlights dental care in dedicated suites, digital radiography, and in-house lab testing, alongside routine consultations, vaccinations and parasite control, and a stocked pharmacy/prescription diets.
From the latest reviews available, owners repeatedly mention vets taking time to explain options (including recommendations for a dog’s future health) and continuity with the same vet for repeat visits (named vet “Michael” is mentioned). One detailed negative review describes problems with record-keeping and communication around insurance claims and prescriptions, including emails not being answered over months, which conflicts with the otherwise positive reports of helpful, responsive staff.
Based on the clinic’s website summary and the latest written reviews available

The lady on reception was very friendly & helpful, & the vet very efficient. The only downside was the number of procedures suggested & extortionate price quoted!

I believe poorly kept records at Calder vets have resulted in being left unable make legitimate claims on a pet insurance policy. We had a retired greyhound, Kitty Jay. For several years her rear end and back legs had slowly been failing her and last Autumn her condition deteriorated to the extent that Calder referred her to specialist vets for treatment. They were unable to diagnose her spinal condition and so we nursed Kitty Jay and provided her with medication prescribed by Calder under the direction of the specialist vet. The problems relating to insurance claims surfaced within weeks of her pet insurance policy renewing in December 2024. It included a substantial excess meaning it would not be worthwhile making an insurance claim until after the bills had exceeded hundreds of pounds. After the insurance renewal I notified reception staff at Penistone that I did not want them to make an insurance claim for her spinal condition. I confirmed that I would pay her spinal bills in full and make the claim personally at a time when it made sense to do that. It came to my attention that staff at Penistone were making claims against the insurance without my knowledge or consent. They were also issuing smaller dose more expensive prescriptions than had been agreed. I was being provided conflicting information during telephone calls with staff at Penistone and so I emailed them. One day I was in the practise and the receptionist stated she had seen the emails and then attempted to give me a verbal explanation that didn’t resolve the issues. I asked her to ensure that I got a written reply to my emails. I sent further emails to Penistone but to this date (approx. 6 months have passed) they have not replied to any of them. Kitty Jays condition worsened. Reluctantly in April 2025 her condition deteriorated to the extent that we had to agree to her euthanasia. The questions regarding bills that I had paid and being able to claim them against the pet insurance remained unanswered. I contacted Calder Vets head office at Dewsbury. Staff their tried to help but without success. The client care manager became involved and agreed to facilitate a meeting between myself and a senior member of staff at Dewsbury so that we could study their records and hopefully come to an agreement. The agreed dates for consideration passed without any contact from Calder. I messaged them again and was informed the person in question was on leave for a few days and that I would be contacted on their return. Another two weeks have passed and again I have received no contact from Calder vets. I believe this all stemmed from poorly kept records at Penistone leading to a breakdown in communication between staff. In conclusion, I feel the lack of customer service at a very difficult time has left much to be desired. I won’t be contacting Calder again about this matter notwithstanding I may or may not be out of pocket as the result of actions taken by their staff. I will now be looking for a new vet for the treatment of our pets and any other pets that we may have in the future.

I registered my daughter's rabbit at this vet in recent years, after starting to understand that rabbits (whilst a common enough pet) are actually classed as 'exotic', and not all vets are the same when it comes to understanding and caring for these little friends. The level of attention to detail and explanations given by these vets is phenomenal, and the clear care for and empathy with both animals and owners I find outstanding. On my most recent visit, the staff were running a 12-hour shift: so the same staff I spoke to at 8am for advice, were the same staff I saw on-site at 7pm - and yet they were still bright, cheery, helpful - and indeed, actually worked on our rabbit with amazing dedication beyond their closing time. Whilst I have lifetime vaccinations for a 1-off £99 at another veterinary establishment; I am now going to pay the same annually at this vet instead - just because of the significant difference in quality of care and attention. (Even though I have to drive 20 miles to see them, whereas our current vet is 'around the corner'.) Thank you Calder Vets: with special 'shout out' to Ansorie, Amy and Julie.

Best thing we did moving to this vets. They actually care about the animals. We moved just over 12 months ago after an alternative opinion. We have seen vet Michael multiple times, he is great with our dog and its great having the same person who inderstands our pets needs combined with ours. Great vets, always friendly.
